Devotion to God

Devotion to God or guru is a powerful asset in Yoga.  The Yoga Sutras list Ishwara Pranidhanam as a way to attain Self-realization and as an essential facet of Yoga.  But, we tend to confuse devotion with emotion.  Bhak, the root of bhakti, means to participate in.  To be devoted means to lovingly think of, dedicate actions for, and show reverence to the Divine in whatever form calls to your heart.  Bhakti is about living, sharing, and serving in love rather than feeling an emotion of love.  One of the things that makes bhakti special is that it inevitably turns outward, to others, to the welfare of all beings and the creation.  True peace and joy are not private affairs.  There is not 'my peace' or 'my joy.'  There is only peace;  there is only joy.  They manifest when they are shared.

OM Shanti, Shanti, Shanti
