"Sacred Wisdom"
by Sri Guruji Reverend Jaganath Carrera

Why did God create the universe?

My Beloved Master, Sri Gurudev Swami Satchidanandaji Maharaj, often said that, one day God, seeing nothing but Him/Herself got bored and so began creating. There's a deep truth to this. It's not that the Supreme Being was sitting in a recliner and complaining, "I've got nothing to do. There's nothing on television. I'm bored. I think I'll create the universe"

That's not the kind of boredom that Sri Gurudev is speaking of. God being bored means, in a way, that it's God's nature to create. God doesn't stay one unified consciousness, one unified energy, forever. God expresses as names and forms.

After a while of being one and nothing but one, creation began with vibration. Like the Bible says, "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God." So the first act of creation was vibration, a humming - the OM sound. And the entire universe evolved from there. So God got bored in that sense. God just won't stay one, undivided and alone. Creation, evolution, dissolution are happening all the time. That's simply God's nature. That's the way it is.

This is what we're dealing with - different names and forms of one and the same Cosmic Consciousness.   All there is is God, there's nothing else, there's nothing else at all. Sometimes we may say there's the spirit, and the material world - we do that for convenience. But the ultimate truth is not that, in reality, all of it - me, you, your family, country, planet, the entire universe - just one stuff.

Meanwhile, we must admit that our daily experience is that although we are all carved from the same piece of wood, we seem to remain convinced that we are separate from each other and from Nature.  But how could God be self-forgetful? How could it be?  If it's all God, why is there this kind of forgetting, this ignorance? If your essence, your ground, is God, why are you forgetting who you really are?  Why does this universe of names and forms seem so real?

We are subject to what is called maya, illusion. It is the power that makes the unreal seem real that masks the infinite with what is finite, and what makes every impermanent object or event seem permanent. It is due to maya that the one Absolute appears as many names and forms. Maya conceals our True Identity. And maya, just like any good illusion, doesn't appear to be an illusion. It seems utterly real. It seems utterly real that without a new car - or new relationship, or a raise - you can't be happy, that you cannot be happy. That's the illusion. Even though we know that unbounded Peace and Joy is our True Identity, we come to believe that without some object or achievement, we simply cannot be happy.

In the New Testament, Lord Jesus clearly states one of his purposes for coming - "I came so that you can have life and have it abundantly." To have life in abundance means to really jump in and fully participate in life without fear. It is, in a way, imitating your Creator. God is fully participating in everything, experiencing the fullness of life every moment. If you want to experience that divine nature, start acting like that. Begin to express your divine nature. Be fearless, enthusiastic, compassionate, loving and joyful. Have faith that all is truly for good; that your True Self is real and within you, just waiting to burst forth in a flash of illumination. We are all being watched over and cared for. The joys and pains of this world are finite, but the Witness in us is infinite bliss. Contemplate these ideas, play with them a little. See where they take you.

Your faith grows steady and strong, fear goes and then you see life in all its fullness, beauty and truth. Your vision will have gone beyond names and forms to perceive the essence of life. It is like a master woodworker who, upon seeing some chess pieces, might not perceive them as chess pieces first. He might see them as beautiful pieces of ebony. His vision has gone one level deeper, from the name and form to the material they are made of. If you don't have that vision, you will identify separate shapes. But the person who has that vision sees the wood first. They see the unity behind the diversity.

What we talked about today are nice, uplifting thoughts, but they only really make an impression on a clear mind. In an unclean mind, the truth of these principles has to compete with many thought-waves that are crashing into each other, vying for your attention. It's hard to really grasp the truth and beauty of spiritual teachings unless the mind is clean and still.

Keep your spiritual life simple. Be regular in your Yoga practices, lead a dedicated life and the light in you will shine brighter and brighter. Gradually, you will experience the full light - enlightenment, you will become a liberated being who will never again know sorrow or suffering and who will serve as a light of wisdom and compassion to all.

May the entire creation be filled with peace and joy, love and light.

OM Shanti, shanti, shanti.

A Quote from
Gurudev

Sri Swami Satchidanandaji Maharaj

"If you run after things, nothing will come to you. Let things run after you. The sea never sends an invitation to the rivers. That's why they run to the sea. The sea is content. It doesn't want anything. That's the secret in life."

OM Shanti, Shanti, Shanti

Where do thoughts come from?

Guruji's Reply:

Ultimately, there is only one Cosmic or Divine Mind. All thoughts are from that Mind. They are like waves in an infinite ocean of consciousness. It may appear that we have thoughts of our own, but in reality, we do not. Our egos - our sense of separateness and limitation, makes us feel that our thinking and our thoughts belong to us, or originated from somewhere inside the mind.

If the Cosmic Mind or God is like an infinite picture, our egos are like frames that can encircle and highlight a portion of the Infinite Mind. As we grow in Yoga, whether through meditation, service, prayer, worship, asana and pranayama, study and self analysis (even better if it's all of these practices in harmony) - our egos (the picture frame) expands, taking in more and more of the Infinite.

But the ego can never expand to Infinity. Enlightenment or Self-realization occurs when the frame is dropped and we realize that we are, were, and always will be the Cosmic Consciousness Itself.

Have you heard about The Peace
Alliance? This group is working toward the creation of a more nonviolent and peaceful world via a national campaign to establish a United States Department of Peace.

They have activists all over the country; student groups and massive email writing campaigns going on to convince lawmakers to sign the bill that is currently before the U.S. House of Representatives. If The Department of Peace is established it would work to reduce domestic and international violence, teach violence prevention and mediation to America's school children, effectively treat and dismantle gang psychology, rehabilitate the prison population and support our military with the complementary approaches to ending violence.
