A Yoga Retreat With Guruji
Oak Ridge, NJ
Friday, 5 October thru Sunday, 7 October
- by Narani Lisa Lorelli
Hari Om, All-
My buddy Lisa and I went to the Healing Dynamics of Yoga Retreat sponsored by Fair Lawn's Integral Yoga Institute (IYI) on the first weekend in October at the Mount Paul Retreat Center in Oak Ridge, NJ. Lovely weather in the woods on a lake, we couldn't have had more beautiful surroundings. We had group meditation, asana classes, kirtan, and teachings on philosophy and healing. The teachers were all heads of IYI centers with the addition of our Beloved Sri Guruji Rev. Jaganath, conducting the much anticipated Saturday night Satsang, and Rev. Premajyothi of Fair Lawn's IYI who skillfully conducted the event.
We observed Mouna-or intentional silence- from 10:00 in the evening until lunchtime the following day. It was pretty special. Swami Ramanandaji, the head of NY IYI, later made the comment, referring to the silence at mealtime, that it was pleasant to experience that you don't have to be talking with people to feel like you're together, like you're connected. Lovely man, loving soul. I had thought that Mouna would enhance a feeling of solitude, but in actuality, it helped me understand that when we suspend the use of conversation as our preferred method of communing, we may discover another, deeper level, where we come together. Also, when you have a buddy with you as you're practicing, you have the added bonus of feeling like a little kid at the dinner table when you're trying not to laugh and milk comes out your nose. This is really good stuff, people!
Yoga Life Society is going to have a retreat at this wonderful place on June 20, 21 & 22 of the coming year. Please consider availing yourself of this fun and fruitful opportunity.
Yours in Yoga,
Narani |
NAVAGRAHA HOMA CEREMONY FOR SRI GURUJI
Sri Venkateshwara Temple
Saturday, 27 October, 2007
- by Karuna Lynne Elson
A beautiful ceremony was held in Bridgewater on October 27th for our beloved Guruji. Attending the Homa at the Sri Venkateshwara Temple was Guruji, his wife, Reverend Janaki, and thier friends from Yogaville, Reverends Paraman and Lakshmi Barsel. Also in attendance from our sangha were Shanti, Padma, Bhavani, her beautiful daughter Jenna, Narani, and Karuna. The priest whose name was Skanda, did a lovely, special fire puja using coconut, flowers, incense, and fruit. Many mantras and prayers were also offered and Skanda invited all of us to come up, pranam, and receive blessings from Guruji by sprinkling a few grains of blessed rice on everyone's heads. The special ceremony, a Navagraha Homa, is done to help attract all auspicious energies for the person it is done for. Navagraha means nine planets. It is in that context that while the homa is for the person's health and strength, it is also to help clear the path for whatever is to be accomplished. At one point we chanted while everyone put their hands on Guruji and we were all moved, even Skanda's eyes teared up. After the service, we paid our respect and toured the gorgeous Hindu temple which held larger than life statues of Goddesses Lakshmi and Durga, Lord Ganesha, Lord Siva, and other revered dieties. We finished our time together with a tasty Indian meal. We all benefited by the trip so much that we talked about going there again as a group in the future.

Guruji in the
Sunshine State:
At Omega's
'Being Yoga' Conference
2-5 November, 2007
- by Narani Lisa Lorelli
Sri Reverend Jaganath (Guruji), his wife, Reverend Janaki, and four of his students (Padma Canning, Narani Lorelli, Uma Friedman, and Karuna Lynne Elson) traveled to Fort Lauderdale, Florida to attend Omega's "Being Yoga" Conference.
Guruji was invited to this conference in order to add emphasis on Yoga philosophy since most of the workshops were focused on Hatha Yoga. He gave three talks: Inside the Yoga Sutras, Encounters with the Eternal (a talk on the Bhagavad Gita), and Overcoming Fear, Anger, and Depression. Each talk was well attended and grew in numbers as word got out about the practical value of his talks and his wonderful insights, and the joy of being with him. His final talk was a standing room affair, filled with students eager to explore new vistas in the great science of Yoga. Many came up to him after every talk to meet him, receive advice, or ask a question. Many more added their name to the Yoga Life Society's email list in order to keep abreast of Guruji's activities and teachings. Perhaps Guruji's approach of presenting the classical holistic teachings of Yoga did fill a bit of a void.
We also rented a booth in the retail sales area where we offered Guruji's books, CDs, tee shirts, tote bags, and informational materials. Everyone took turns staffing the booth. This simple task was also a way to serve people interested in the broader teachings of Yoga as a number of attendees stopped by to chat and ask questions.
The blessing and joy of being with Guruji and each other cannot be overemphasized. It is a rare and exceptional experience to be and serve with your guru in such a close and sustained way. And, by serving together, we had the opportunity to deepen our own connections with each other, discovering how truly wonderful, wise, and fun our own sangha members are. We also came to more deeply appreciate that we are not drifting on a vast sea of Yoga teachings and teachers without clear, grounded direction and guidance. As Guruji teaches, we can and should learn from anyone and anything. At the same time, we are rooted. We are fortunate to have found our direction and our home. |
